Thornton (together with its neighbouring village of Cleveleys, known as Thornton-Cleveleys) is a village in the Fylde, in Lancashire, England, about four miles north of Blackpool and two miles south of Fleetwood. It is in the borough of Wyre. The two villages are linked by Victoria Road.
Thornton contains a number of schools, including Stanah County Primary School, Royles Brook Primary School, and Millfield Science and Performing Arts College in addition to a small public library. Marsh Mill, a large well-preserved windmill, built in 1794, is a prominent landmark. Thornton is mentioned in the Domesday Book where it was referred to as Torentum but its much younger neighbour, Cleveleys, a bustling seaside resort, developed in the 19th century around a hotel owned by a Mr. Cleveleys.
Cleveleys's wide sandy beach and promenade (currently undergoing redevelopment) provide sea views over the Irish Sea to the west and Morecambe Bay and the Lake District mountains to the north. Tourists flock to the seaside town every summer to enjoy the seaside entertainment, bingo halls and shopping on the main street. Over the years it has grown into an important seaside resort and is enjoyed by people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of neighbouring Blackpool.
